Social cause wins miner 8 awards [Tanzania]

...[An] initiative meant to identify mining companies that are doing well in giving back to surrounding communities was held last week, with Geita Gold Mine (GGM) scooping eight awards. President Jakaya Kikwete launched the Presidential Award on the Extractive Industry Corporate Social Responsibility and Empowerment Programme (CSRE)...GGM, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti Limited emerged as the first winner in a total of four awards. These were in areas of: health, education, procurement and water for the communities...Among its traits, the firm runs its annual Geita Gold Mine Kilimanjaro climb challenge for HIV/Aids. So far, it has raised over Sh3.7 billion ($2.2 million) since its inception in 2002...In collaboration with Geita authorities, GGM has contributed over Sh1 billion ($ 630 000) in the last four years towards the fight against Malaria infection around Geita communities by applying Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) intervention around Geita communities.
