Spain: Controversial trial against 8 Airbus trade union leaders accused of violence starts; workers protest in support of the leaders

“Spain: 'Airbus 8' Trial Starts Amid Protest for Right To Strike”

The workers are being prosecuted under a law that has not been applied since General Francisco Franco's dictatorship…The controversial trial of striking workers commonly referred to as the "Airbus Eight” [part of EADS] started Tuesday in Getafe, near Madrid, while hundreds protested across the country to express their support for the cause…The trade unionists each face up to eight years and three months in prison for “acting with violence” and “attacking the right to work” during a general strike held Sept. 29, 2010, in protest of the labor reform pushed by the then socialist government of President Jose Luis Zapatero…The workers' lawyers denied the facts and criticized the prosecutors for failing to accuse the workers individually, while instead blaming union leaders (also members of the company's committee) for the violence.
