For former Asarco employee Jimmy Dominguez, seeing the battle for and against the mothballed copper smelter has been heart-wrenching. Dominguez said he would like to return to his former employer, and is dismayed to see what he calls myths about Asarco influence many El Pasoans against seeing the smelter reopen...About two dozen Asarco supporters attended Saturday's rally, at times getting into heated arguments with a group of people opposed to the smelter's reopening. Those who attended the rally against Asarco included West-Central city Rep. Susie Byrd, County Commissioner Veronica Escobar and state Sen. Eliot Shapleigh, D-El Paso...Shapleigh said...that the smelter would emit 7,000 tons of pollution if reopened. "We need clean air, and we need good jobs."
