Suicide in Foxconn and New Challenge for HR [China] [subscription required]

Since late January 2010, there has been a succession of suicides at Foxconn…In response, Wang Tongxin,- Vice President of the Shenzhen Federation of Labour Unions, said the repeated occurrences reveal management shortcomings at Foxconn, and asked the company to learn from the lessons and build a more “people-oriented” management system. The head of Foxconn’s media office admitted after this that there are indeed problems in the company’s management system…Part of the reason for those problems is the size of the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen…Workers complain that such systems make it difficult for their voices to be heard by top management…Another worker said Foxconn employees feel ‘unbalanced’ as they produce the best products in the world while probably receiving the worst treatment…Foxconn has 80s and 90s generation migrant workers pouring in and waiting to be recruited, despite the suicides…Faced with this new generation, what should a company do with their HR policy and practices to avoid tragedy and improve performance?
