Tanzania: Geita Gold Mines initiative to support communities hard hit by HIV/Aids pandemic

"15th Kili HIV/Aids Challenge for Launch"

The 15th Kilimanjaro HIV/ Aids Challenge [ orgnised by Geita Gold Mine (GGM) and the Tanzania Commission for Aids] will be launched this week...GGM communications manager Tenga Tenga said...the Kilimanjaro HIV/ Aids Challenge is a campaign started in 2002 to raise funds annually to support communities in areas hit hard by the pandemic. The funds raised are allocated to Aids research, support of orphanages, hospitals and clinics in efforts to decrease the impact of the disease on those left behind by deceased parents and relatives and reduce the stigma of those with HIV/Aids.

The initiative directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 3 to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. The campaign will continue to raise funds to reduce the spread of HIV/Aids by 2030. The charity is expected to contribute more funds and play a major role in reducing the number of HIV-related deaths in Tanzania and give people the hope of an HIV-free future...

The pandemic has affected more than 1.3 youth and orphans. "The number can increase if we don't intervene because society has a little knowledge about HIV/ Aids because information centres are few and medical support is inadequate," he said.
