Tanzania: Shanta Gold donates desks to support school around its mine

"Mining firm vows to contribute to community development in Songwe"

Shanta Mining Company Limited, which operates New Luika Gold Mine in Songwe Region said the donation is part of its efforts to back government calls to end shortage of desks in public schools. In line with the initiative, the company has donated 200 school desks, to the Saza Primary School. The company has ensured that local carpenters made all the desks, from locally sourced materials.

Songwe District Commissioner, Samwel Jeremia commended the mining company for the donation saying the government appreciates companies which give back to the community. “With this donation, this school now has enough desks to meet the needs of all pupils,” Jeremia said after receiving the desks. He called upon other corporate bodies to follow Shanta Mining’s initiative to support local business development. Shanta Mining’s General Manager at New Luika gold mine, Scott Yelland promised continued support to back government’s efforts to ensure the universal quality education for every child as their basic right. “In any thriving community, quality education is important to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to prosper.
