Tanzania: Video of Zakaria Nyamakomo, paralysed from injuries allegedly caused by police beating at North Mara mine
Author: Rights and Accountability in Development (UK), Published on: 4 January 2017
Zakaria's Story: North Mara Gold Mine, Tanzania, 21 Dec. 2016
"When I came home [in February 2014, after my injury]...I went to the Grievance Mechanism office at the mine, to ask them for help. They gave me a form, and promised to contact me within 30 days. But since then, until today, I've heard nothing from them."
Acacia Mining says Zakaria's injuries resulted from a fall. Mine officials requested he sign a document in English to this effect. Zakaria disputes this version. He says he was able to run after his fall and it was the violent police beating that broke his back.
