Turkey: Concerns raised over health impacts of chemical use in denim bleaching

This report... researches potassium permanganate’s harmful effects on denim bleaching workers... we interviewed workers who were exposed to PP, in order to obtain firsthand information about their resulting problems in health and life...

... Almost all of the workers... said that applying the chemicals PP and sulphite without wearing masks, safety goggles and gloves, causes skin irritation... Workers also declared that they did not receive regular health examinations at their work places, and that it was difficult for them to go to the hospital when they were ill... 

There are many migrant workers... in Tier 2 and Tier 3 subcontractor firms which engage in informal and illegal production...[T]he majority of migrant workers...receive 50% less pay compared to Turkish workers...

...Workers are called to work...when orders intensify...employed...on a daily or periodical basis... They work uninsured and informally... known as “standby workers"... Most of the workers...worked 12 hours a day, 6 days a week... the legal working hours maximum is 45 hours...most...workshops pay overtime after 72 hours of work...
