Turkey: glassworkers of Okan Group on strike over long-standing union busting

Glassworkers have been on strike at the Okan group’s Düzce Cam factory in the town of Düzce, northwest Turkey since July 26. The workers have been involved in a four-year struggle for the Kristal-Iş union to be recognized by the company.

The Ministry of Labour ruled that the union has the right to be the bargaining representative, but the company has ignored this, sacking around 80 workers over the course of the dispute because of their union membership.

According to IndustriALL Global Union, Düzce Cam, subsidiary of Turkish-based glassmaker, Okan Group in the town of Düzce has allegedly used every union-busting tactics in violation of the national and international legislation, including dismissal of union members and nominated union representatives.

Okan Group allegedly intimidated workers through " anti-union actions against union members in a way to force them to leave the union". It is reported that management has illegally dismissed around 80 union members, including officially nominated union representatives, for their union membership.

On August 20th, 2019, The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre has contacted Okan Group to seek a response concerning these allegations. The group has not submitted a response.

According to Industrial Global Union, Düzce Cam, subsidiary of Turkish-based glassmaker, Okan Group in the town of Düzce has allegedly used every union-busting tactics in violation of the national and international legislation, including dismissal of union members and nominated union representatives.

Okan Group persistently continued its intimidation and anti-union actions against union members in a way to force them to leave the union. To date management has illegally dismissed around 80 union members, including officially nominated union representatives, for their union membership.

In addition, the Okan Group management failed to attend a mediation meeting facilitated by the Turkish Labour Ministry, categorically refusing any dialogue with Kristal-Is.
