UAE: Repatriated Indian workers stranded for 11 months allege abuses incl. delayed wages and physical abuse

10 migrant workers from Odisha, India are returning home after being stranded in Dubai for 11 months. The workers had travelled to Dubai as carpenters and painters on a construction site but found themselves stranded without the pay they had been promised. They allege a range of abuses including delayed wage payments, working overtime without pay and harsh working conditions, and that the company withheld their passports and tortured them. The workers also allege that their food was rationed and that they were denied access to medicine by site supervisors.

In May the workers made a plea to authorities via a video distributed on Twitter in which they alleged the abuses and asked to be repatriated. The External Affairs Minister and Consulate General of India in Dubai confirmed that a total of 25 workers are waiting to be repatriated and that they were taking action to return them. The 10 workers from Odisha returned to India in June with support from the Indian government and local community in Odisha.
