Fairtrade hallmark sets the gold standard

[T]he world's first Fairtrade and Fairmined hallmark for gold is launched in the UK. This will ensure customers buying jewellery can, for the first time, know exactly where it came from. Like other hallmarks, this mark will be a physical stamp, and each piece will be fully traceable and come with its own certification…[I]t already has the support of some influential players in the industry, including...the creative director at the world's oldest jewellery firm, Garrard...The response from Signet, the company behind H Samuel and Ernest Jones, has been more cautious…Most jewellers make a nod to the social and environmental issues around gold - Cartier [part of Richemont] and Tiffany…are supporting members of the No Dirty Gold campaign - but without traceability in the supply chain…[also refers to Cred Jewellery]

Colombia: first ever Fairtraide and Fairmined Ecological Gold from Condoto, Oro Verde! [includes video]

[T]he Condoto Iró Community Council from the Oro Verde (Green Gold) initiative, were issued their Fairtrade and Fairmined certificate for Ecological Gold. 90 family productive units extract gold using ancestral artisanal mining techniques that ensure a sustainable use of the natural resources of their home – Chocó Bioregion, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. No toxic chemicals are used in the mining and strict ecological restoration practices are observed. Oro Verde is a part of the organizational process of ethnic Afro-Colombian communities, aiming at the preservation of their ancestral knowledge and cultural identity...Jorge Perea, community leader of Oro Verde in Condoto...‘We consider Fairtrade and Fairmined certification meets the needs of miners seeking to improve their quality of life and strengthen our identity as an ethnic group…
