Network launched to combat modern slavery in the hotel sector

Leading hoteliers have come together to launch an industry-wide network to combat modern slavery in UK hotels...led by Shiva Foundation...will help representatives from across the industry address risks in their facilities, employment practices and supply chains. The network will work collaboratively to develop and test methods to be shared throughout the hotel and hospitality sector. The founding members are Shiva Hotels, Hilton and Bespoke Hotels. The British Hospitality Association has endorsed the scheme and will support its expansion throughout the hotel sector. The International Tourism Partnership, which works with leading international hotel groups on human rights, is also supporting the scheme to enable it to sync with corporate policies beyond the UK. With 180,000 businesses involved in UK hospitality and tourism, there is significant scope for the network to grow. The Stop Slavery Hotel Industry Network has been formed following a roundtable held by Shiva Foundation and Thomson Reuters Foundation in early November.

Major UK hotels Hilton, Shiva join fight against modern slavery

Hotels across Britain are joining forces to fight modern slavery in an initiative to be unveiled on Wednesday that will encourage staff and guests to help spot signs of trafficking in hotel foyers and corridors. Major hotel groups, including the Hilton and Shiva Hotels, will pledge to examine their supply chains for forced labor, train staff how to spot and report signs of trafficking, and raise awareness of the issue among hotel guests. From goods made by forced labor to hotels being used to sexually exploit trafficking victims, many hoteliers are on the frontline of the fight against slavery, said campaign head Meenal Sachdev from the Shiva Foundation, an anti-trafficking group funded by Shiva Hotels."Businesses have a big role to play. It's not just the government's job, it's not just charities working on the ground trying to protect these victims," said Sachdev, who started the Stop Slavery Hotel Industry Network.
