News of the World to close amid hacking scandal [UK]

This Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper…[says] News International chairman James Murdoch…[P]roceeds from the last edition would go to good causes. Downing Street said it had no role or involvement in the decision…Mr Murdoch said the good things the News of the World does "have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong - indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our company. The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself"…Labour MP Tom Watson told Sky News it was "a victory for decent people up and down the land, and I say good riddance to the News of the World".

Prime Minister orders phone hack inquiry: PM acts after 7/7 bug revelation [UK]

David Cameron...responded to the public outrage over the News of the World [part of News Corp.] phone hacking scandal with a pledge for two public inquiries...More major companies including Halifax, Vauxhall and Virgin Holidays pulled their advertising from the paper...Graham Foulkes, whose 22-year-old son David was killed in the bombings, said the thought of someone listening into his highly charged and personal phone messages was "just horrendous"...Police confirmed that phone calls of the parents of the murdered Soham schoolgirls may have been hacked into while their children were missing...[T]hree key supporters of the Madeleine McCann campaign were warned their calls were illegally accessed by the Sunday tabloid…Mark Lewis, the solicitor for the Dowler family and other alleged victims, said: "Over and over again we find it is people who have suffered the most appalling tragedies have been victims a second time by a newspaper that was supposed to be on their side."
