UK: Union calls on shoppers to boycott ASOS as 70 staff made redundant amidst COVID-19 crisis

“Boycott Asos campaign launched after 70 workers face redundancy during coronavirus outbreak”, 10 April 2020

Shoppers are being asked to boycott ASOS after 70 workers have been made redundant amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) is calling on the clothing giant to honour the workers' contracts…

The sacked workers consist of 20 admin staff and 50 drivers, employed by … Menzies to deliver parcels for the clothing brand, expected they would be taken on by courier DPD …

… [W]hen [DPD] was told it would have to honour Menzies' employment package, which includes sick pay, holiday pay, and parental leave … it u-turned on its commitment to retain the drivers, announcing it would dismiss them on 1 May.

As DPD and Hermes pay couriers per parcel delivered, rather than a standard hourly rate, IWGB believes the clothing giant will save significant sums…

[Max Dewhurst, Vice President of IWGB said] "Even during this horrific pandemic, ASOS, DPD and Hermes are undermining the basic rights of drivers who like many key workers, clock in every day to keep the country running, at considerable risk to their health…”

ASOS has declined to comment.
