Union members in Thailand continue to pay a high price for standing up for their fundamental rights

Srithon Preungwichathorn and 42 other workers at the Hoya Glass Disk (Thailand) Company…were dismissed on Aug 4 this year…many were hurt as they were dragged violently off by the company's security personnel while waiting to learn the reason for their dismissal…"There was no advance notice and no compensation…” said Srithon, a former assistant manager… workers at Hoya are forced to check up on each other constantly…In the early stages…there were reports of health and environmental problems and a number of workers died suddenly…management…categorically denied workers were dying because of exposure to toxic substances…workers…felt…unfair exploitation of their labour, and say they were underpaid…the labour union's registration was revoked after the union had been in active operation for many months...[refers also to Almond Jewelry factory]
