U.S. and Canadian apparel companies are flocking to Mexico in search of cheap labour. How ethical are your jeans?

[Barrios] has been receiving death threats...As president of the Human and Labour Rights Commission of the Tehuacán Valley, Barrios has investigated working conditions in maquilas as well as helped to organize maquila workers...For this he has drawn the ire of large maquila consortium owners and their cronies in the state and municipal governments...The day after his arrest, the same maquila owners placed a paid ad in a local paper thanking the governor [Marín] for throwing Barrios in jail...[But] many major companies including Gap wrote letters to Marín asking for him to respect the state of law and release Barrios...Marín rapidly yielded to the will of international business...[also refers to Los Pinos maquiladora (part of Azteca Production International, making jeans primarily for American Eagle and Tommy Hilfiger, but also for Polo Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein (part of Phillips-Van Heusen), and others), Confecciones Ajalpan]
