Microsoft tops 2018 ranking of 'just' companies

The JUST Capital Foundation, in partnership with Forbes, has released the 2018 ranking of the one hundred most socially "just" companies in the United States... Based on a survey of fifty thousand Americans who were asked what they thought the most important corporate attributes were, JUST Capital and Forbes ranked nearly nine hundred of the largest publicly traded companies in the U.S. on thirty-six of those attributes grouped into seven categories — job creation, worker pay and benefits, customer treatment, product pricing and quality, environmental impact, contribution to community well-being, and ethical leadership. Microsoft ranked first overall, followed by Intel and Alphabet, the parent company of Google... Rankings by individual category were topped by chipmaker Nvidia (worker pay and benefits), Intel (customer treatment), health insurer Humana (product pricing and quality), Microsoft (environmental impact), online retailer Wayfair (job creation), mining company Freeport-McMoRan (community well-being), and United Rentals (ethical leadership). Companies that ranked first in their industries on the Just 100 list include IBM, Procter & Gamble, Cisco Systems, Humana, UPS, Amazon.com, Nike, and Hilton... Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella — who has publicly committed to a reduction in the company’s carbon emissions of 75 percent by 2030 — told Forbes he asks himself: "Is your business interest really helping the world solve some of its pressing challenges? If not, then we have a problem."

Forbes partnered with Just Capital, which asked 81,000 Americans about what they most want to see from the nation’s biggest businesses:... Pay workers fairly; treat customers well and protect their privacy; produce quality products; minimize their environmental impact; give back to the communities they operate in; commit to ethical and diverse leadership; and create abundant job opportunities... With those seven priorities in mind, we ranked 890 of America's largest publicly-traded companies... the the 2019 Just 100... are taking the public interest into their own hands and generating better returns for themselves and society in the process...

A surprising push by the invisible hand: why more companies are doing better by being good

Leading American corporations have increasingly begun to hold themselves to standards in all sorts of areas involving the public interest—from wages to paid leave to emissions—that the current government shows no interest in mandating... To arrive at its standards, Just Capital has surveyed more than 80,000 Americans about what they expect from corporations when it comes to workers, the environment, customers and products, the community, shareholders and human rights. This purportedly divided country has large majorities that believe companies should pay their workers fairly, protect their customers’ privacy and minimize pollution... American citizens value nothing more than whether companies pay a fair wage—84% tell Just Capital they should... The retail industry is the most prolific provider of low-wage jobs: Just Capital estimates 4.2 million retail workers don’t earn a living wage... Given that the U.S., unlike the vast majority of wealthy developed countries, does not mandate paid maternity leave, paid vacations or even paid sick leave, many companies are leaping ahead to bridge that disconnect before the regulatory pendulum swings back to do it for them. The semiconductor maker Nvidia, which ranks first for worker treatment on the Just 100 list, provides 22 weeks of paid leave to new mothers and offers a concierge service that does up to six hours of errand running a month for each worker.
