USA: Local leaders in West Virginia file OECD Guidelines case against Rockwool alleging breaches of human rights & environmental provisions

West Virginians for Sustainable Development and several local community leaders and politicians have filed a new OECD Guidelines case against Danish building-material manufacturer, Rockwool. The complaint alleges breaches of the human rights and environmental provisions of the Guidelines related to political improprieties, air quality risks, and water quality risks associated with a proposed factory in Jefferson County, West Virginia.

Complainants are asking that Rockwool immediately stop construction of the factory and return the site to as close to its original condition as possible, or to at least stop construction of the factory until remedies are agreed to and implemented. These include the use of a cleaner burning electric arc furnace, conducting independent human health and environmental risk assessments, and doing additional air and water quality monitoring.
