USA: Rights groups cite intimidation & threats in struggle to unionise Nissan’s Mississippi plant; company denies allegations

"Labor leaders’ visit rekindles Nissan union talks", 10 Oct 2014

…International trade union leaders traveled to Canton this week to assess workers’ treatment at the Nissan auto plant and continue efforts to establish a labor union for the factory…Together the groups are fighting to unionize the Canton plant…The international delegation joined forces with United Auto Workers and local coalition Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan, a group of politicians, clergy and other local community leaders…The groups gave reporters multiple reasons for unionization, including intimidation by Nissan supervisors regarding employees’ union talk, threats to cut jobs or close the plant if a union is formed and mandatory meetings for employees that include anti-union lectures by Nissan administrators. Multiple Nissan employees refuted those claims Friday, and the company maintained none of the groups’ allegations was accurate…Camille Young, Nissan manager of Government Relations, said the groups’ allegations are unfounded and the company has always supported the right for its employees to unionize…
