La Universidad de Michigan anunció el lunes la rescisión de su contrato con la fábrica de ropa Russell Corp. al afirmar que la empresa se ha negado a respetar los derechos laborales en una planta en Honduras. Russell cerró su fábrica en...Choloma en el 2007 después de que 750 de los mil 800 trabajadores formaron un sindicato. Los mensajes enviados...a la compañía...no fueron contestados de inmediato. Russell es propiedad de Berkshire Hathaway Inc...La empresa ha dicho que cerró la planta debido a cambios en la demanda y no por anular la organización sindical. La Universidad de Cornell dijo el viernes que había suspendido las relaciones con Russell, después de medidas similares adoptadas por universidades de Georgetown, Wisconsin, Miami, Rutgers, Houston, Columbia y Purdue.

Michigan Is the Latest University to End a Licensing Deal With an Apparel Maker [USA]

The University of Michigan announced on Monday that it was ending its apparel licensing agreement with the Russell Corporation [subsidiary of Fruit of the Loom, part of Berkshire Hathaway], becoming the 12th university to do so in response to the company’s decision to close a unionized factory in Honduras...In a report issued Feb. 16, Russell said the closing was the result of “economic considerations and was not caused by the presence of the union at the factory.”...In its report...Russell wrote, “We acknowledge that management mistakes were made that led to a failure to adhere” to “standards on freedom of association.” The company vowed to improve its compliance...
