[Video] Dispatches: The Real Price of Gold

Dispatches challenges the British gold jewellery industry to come clean about where the gold in their jewellery comes from...Secretly filming at Britain's biggest high street jewellery chains, Bounds exposes shop assistants giving vastly misleading information about where the gold in their jewellery is mined. Then, unable to get a straight answer from the stores, Bounds travels to the mines where some gold is sourced. [Transcript:] [Signet] "does not mislead customers and cares about the provenance of the gold itself [and] has made some changes to [staff] training programmes"...[GoldCorp responded to Dispatches buy saying that it is] "committed to...respect the human rights of the communities in which [it operates]"…[and] "believes that there is no basis for claims that any local medical conditions are the result of the presence or operation of the [San Martin] mine [in Honduras]"...[Cookson noted that their proposed recycled and ecogold products have] "a higher cost attached to them due to the complexities of traceability and separate inventory management"…[The programme suggests that] "recycling gold might present an ethical business solution to the problems surrounding mined gold" [Also refers to: Gold By Gold, Cred Jewellery, Cookson Precious Metals, HSBC]
