Workers win lung-disease legal battle against MHI [Japan]

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. was ordered Tuesday to pay ¥564 million to 36 plaintiffs comprising former employees who contracted lung disease after working at the firm's shipbuilding facilities and family members of deceased workers. Presiding Judge Naoyuki Tagawa of the Nagasaki District Court said the duties of the workers, including those at subcontractors, "entailed the risk of contracting lung disease and the company had a duty to ensure their safety by protecting their health."
