Xstrata hit with Australia lead exposure claim

An Australian law firm said…it had begun legal proceedings against miner Xstrata over a 6-year-old girl who has suffered injuries...allegedly linked to lead exposure from the company's Mount Isa mining complex...The claim alleges that Mount Isa Mines Ltd [part of Xstrata] negligently caused the contamination of large parts of Mount Isa with lead and other toxic elements for at least the past 20 years…Xstrata Copper North Queensland's chief operating officer...said...the company was working to improve lead emission controls in Mount Isa after a Queensland state health minister said preliminary findings showed 45 children in the region displayed elevated lead levels…Xstrata was not immediately prepared to make a statement, but may do so later on Thursday, a company spokeswoman…said.
