An estimated fifty people from several households surrounding Nkandabwe Coal Mine (formerly Collum Coal Mine, now owned by ZCCM Investments Holdings) in Zambia were left homeless after their houses developed huge cracks and almost collapsed from the effects of weak pillars of coal mining tunnels. Their livelihoods were negatively affected as they had to flee the area and are now temporarily accommodated in tents. The Member of Parliament for the area has called upon the mining company to take fully responsibility for not doing a proper assessment of the impact that those tunnels would create on the locals before starting their operations and compensate the affected families.
