Five Marange residents have dragged three diamond mining firms based in that area tocourt, accusing the companies of discharging human waste and other chemicals in nearby rivers...Anjin Investments (Private) Limited, Marange Resources (Private) Limited and Diamond Mining Company (Private) Limited were cited as respondents. The mining companies are involved in diamond exploration and mining in the Marange communal lands. According to court papers, in conducting their mining activities, the firms are discharging untreated waste material and effluent into the Odzi, Save and Singwizi rivers. “Further the first to the third defendants (mining firms) discharge untreated human waste into the rivers. These discharges heavily pollute the Save and Odzi rivers resulting in the rivers being silted, muddied, dirty and loaded with chemical and metal deposits including iron, chromium and nickel,” the court was told...They also argued that the pollution had destroyed the aquatic life like fish, thereby destroying the ecosystem...[T]he mining companies entered special pleas, arguing that the residents had not exhausted their remedies under the Environmental Management Act for the protection of their rights...

The Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (Zela) and villagers...are seeking a court order to bar three diamond mining companies in Marange district from polluting water sources...In a High Court application...Zela and the villagers alleged that Anjin Investments [joint venture Anhui Foreign Economic Construction & Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC)], Marange Resources [part of ZMDC] and Diamond Mining Corporation (DMC) [joint venture Pure Diam & ZMDC] were polluting Save, Singwizi and Odzi rivers with sewage, chemicals and metal deposits. Zela said the discharges...exposed inhabitants of villages...to risks of contracting diseases such as cancer, cholera and typhoid...Zela...wrote to Anjin demanding that the company cease discharging the pollutants...Anjin denied discharging pollutants into the rivers saying water containing sand mud was filtered in sedimentation ponds...But the letter signed by Anjin senior official...painted a different picture: “..[I]t happened one or two times. Pumps broke down and little recycled water was not pumped away in time, resulting in the overflow of the water from the ponds...”

The Marange diamond fields...have been an infamous example of so-called blood diamonds...Now, the impoverished residents who live near the mines have another cause for concern...Numerous local officials and leaders of civic organizations contend that people who have bathed in the river have developed rashes and other skin ailments, and that other residents have grown ill after drinking river water. Farai Maguwu, director of the Center for Research and Development...said he is concerned that large diamond processing plants on the Odzi are releasing toxic effluent and raw sewage into the river, which flows into the larger Save, or Sabi, River...“We don’t know what these diamond companies are discharging into the river,” said [local herdsman, Richford] Maramba, squinting into a scorching sun. “But whatever it is, it is not good for us and our livestock.” Figuring out what...the diamond companies are releasing into the Odzi River is a daunting task, given the tight security at the mines, the ties of the mining companies to Mugabe’s regime and his ZANU-PF Party, and the lack of transparency in Marange diamond operations.
