Journalist Julio César Vásquez Calle is pursuing a complaint to the Piura region prosecutor's office against police officers and mining company security guards [from the firm Forza (part of Securitas)] he claims tortured him while he was reporting on a protest in March 2005. On 5 February he received a phone call from a man who told him he would be killed unless he dropped his complaint. Amnesty International believes that he and the 28 members of peasant communities pursuing the same complaint are in grave danger...Julio Vásquez...had been reporting on a peaceful march by people from the Piura Region...to the Majaz mining company...Majaz was a subsidiary of...Monterrico Metals. Minera Majaz was responsible for running the copper mining project Río Blanco, until February 2007, when Monterrico Metals was bought by the Chinese Consortium Zijin...RECOMMENDED ACTION: PLEASE SEND APPEALS TO ARRIVE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE...

Periodista que denunció torturas en Majaz es amenazado de muerte [Perú]

El periodista Julio Vásquez, ex corresponsal de radio Cutivalú, quien denunció las torturas de las que fue víctima con un grupo de comuneros en las instalaciones de la empresa minera Majaz (hoy Río Blanco [parte de Monterrico Metals, de Zijin]) en Piura, en el año 2005, viene siendo objeto de amenazas de muerte vía telefónica, según informó la Fundación Ecuménica para el Desarrollo y la Paz (FEDEPAZ)...él hizo la denuncia y publicó las fotos de las torturas perpetradas por elementos de la Policía Nacional, así como la empresa de seguridad FORZA [parte de Securitas] encargada de la protección de la empresa minera...Vásquez aseguró...que...escuchó a un civil manifestar que fueron torturados "por orden de (Andrew) Bristow", entonces gerente de Operaciones de la minera.

Today is subject of death threats by telephone, according to Fundación Ecuménica para el Desarrollo y la Paz (FEDEPAZ). According to...FEDEPAZ, Vásquez Calle, pointed out that he received constant death threats, on anonymous telephone calls...After he denunciated and published photographs of the tortures perpetrated by the National Police and by the security company FORZA [part of Securitas] in charge of the protection of the mining company...Vásquez...affirmed that while they were hooded, he heard a civilian say that they were tortured “by orders of (Andrew) Bristow”, he was the mining Operations Manager.
