Cambodia: Prime Minister calls for effective cooperations between States and NGOs stakeholders as human trafficking is a global issue

For the first time since the US State Department downgraded Cambodia’s standing to Tier 3 in its annual “Trafficking in Persons Report”, Prime Minister Hun Sen … addressed the matter, and called it a global issue…

He was speaking at the 6th “National Inter-Faith Forum against Human Trafficking” under the theme “Do Not Use Cambodia as a Destination of Trafficking in Persons” in Phnom Penh.

Mr Hun Sen said that “human trafficking is becoming a global issue that requires joint cooperation, especially the exchange of information between countries”.

He said tackling the crimes can also be done within the framework of comprehensive cooperation mechanisms under the umbrellas of the United Nations, regional organisations and NGOs.

Mr Hun Sen said that the government remains committed to enforcing the law to combat crimes associated with human trafficking such as cyber-fraud, drug offences, money laundering and illegal online gambling.

… Chou Bun Eng, a secretary of state of the Ministry of Interior and vice-chairwoman of the National Committee for Counter Trafficking (NCCT), said … the government will not allow perpetrators to use Cambodia as a major location for human trafficking and continues to take action against the crime…

… Centre for Alliance of Labour and Human Rights Programme Manager Khun Tharo said yesterday that the Prime Minister’s remarks and the actions of the Cambodian authorities in cracking down on human trafficking show that the government recognises the findings of civil society organisations and the international community…
