Dominican Republic: Organisations and jewelry producers send letters to Barrick Gold outlining concerns over social and environmental impacts of mine expansion

Mining Watch

Eighty-eight organisations from more than 21 countries published a letter calling on the Dominican Republic and Barrick Gold Corporation to cease the proposed expansion of the Pueblo Viejo gold mine. In addition, 15 jewellery producers signed another letter supporting the concerns raised by civil society. The organisations and the producers pointed out their considerations regarding the social and environmental impacts of the project, especially when it comes to the water sources of the affected communities. The letters were sent to the Dominican Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, as well as the to Mark Bristow, President and CEO of Barrick Gold Corporation; and to Juana Barceló, President of Barrick Pueblo Viejo, Barrick’s Dominican subsidiary, in advance of the company’s annual general meeting in Toronto.
