Kazakhstan: ArcelorMittal Temirtau fined after 200 industrial safety violations revealed at Abayskaya mine

At the Abaiskaya mine of the ArcelorMittal Temirtau company in the city of Abay, Karaganda region, where six miners died and three more were injured as a result of a methane and rock mass release last year, the prescribed measures are not being carried out. This was reported by state industrial safety inspectors after a scheduled inspection of the mine. It is reported that the company did not eliminate a number of violations after that tragedy and previous accidents. According to state inspectors, 200 industrial safety violations were identified.

According to industrial safety officials, the Abayskaya mine is dangerous due to sudden outbursts of coal and gas, as well as the explosiveness of coal dust. According to the Department of Industrial Safety, the mine is not provided with devices for determining the temperature of the rock mass; the methodology for forecasting mining and geological conditions has not been developed jointly with scientific institutes; there is no updating and additional staffing of computer equipment, forecasting service, geological surveying service; geological digital modeling and seismic exploration of coal mines are not carried out; devices for monitoring the content of coal dust have not been purchased...
