So. Africa: Minister exposes companies withholding govt. unemployment funds meant for workers during COVID-19 & warns against similar practices

The Minister of Labour and Employment issued a stern warning to employers who have received Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) Covid-19 temporary employer/employee relief scheme benefits from government but are not passing on the money to workers. The Department of Employment and Labour said the UIF has been inundated with calls from workers complaining that employers have not paid them their benefits despite having received funds on behalf of the employees. The Minister also named Unibisco as one of the companies that is guilty of this conduct, having allegedly failed to disburse money claimed from the Unemployment Insurance Fund Covid-19 relief fund to its employees. The Labour department has since upgraded its system to allow employees to check status of claims submitted by employers to avoid continued withholding of funds by employers.
