AI leaders warn of increasing AI risks and call for global regulation before the UN

The heads of major AI companies, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, urged world leaders at the UN Security Council to establish international safeguards to address risks from increasingly powerful AI systems. Representatives, including the foreign ministers of France and the United Kingdom, also called for common international frameworks, while the US opposed global AI governance. The meeting was convened by France to coincide with the 81st UN General Assembly. It also came ahead of an expected visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington, where AI regulation is expected to be discussed.
