Colombia: During fourth week of protests, organisations denounce attacks against Indigenous Peoples, misuse of US weapons and evidence of police involvement in civilian deaths

Agência Brasil EBC

Historic protests have taken place in hundreds of cities in Colombia. Nearly 1 million people have protested over the past month. Indigenous peoples have also participated in the demonstrations, which has intensified public debate. The demands of the protesters and those of the Indigenous peoples overlap. However, they have been facing obstacles to their participation like suffering attacks and intimidation attempts. In addition, the newspaper The Washington Post has examined video footage related to four civilian deaths. Based on the same resources, national authorities have detained and indicted police officers in three of the four cases, after being under growing international pressure. Concurrently, Amnesty International has called on US Secretary of State Blinken to “immediately cease the direct or indirect supply, sale, or transfer of equipment used for repression such as small arms, shotguns, and related ammunition; less-lethal equipment, such as tear gas, riot control projectiles and launchers; armored vehicles, dual-use surveillance technologies, training, and any other technical or financial assistance”. The organization alleges that US weapons and equipment have been misused to violate human rights during the Colombian protests.
