EU: EU halt talks on anti-greenwashing law

In June 2025, just days before final informal talks to conclude the law were scheduled to take place, the EU commission announced it intended to withdraw the Green Claims Directive. Following this announcement, the EU Council has decided to cancel the final trilogue.

"Let’s call this what it is: a coordinated attack by the Commission and the EPP against green legislation. The timing is no accident – this is a cynical attempt to kill important legislation that would protect consumers from greenwashing and ensure honest environmental claims. Ursula von der Leyen as Commission chief is betraying her mandate and turning the Commission into the EPP’s headquarters. That’s an institutional scandal."
Tiemo Wölken, S&D spokesperson for the European Parliament’s committee for the environment, climate and food safety and rapporteur for the directive

The directive was proposed in 2023 and was supposed to prevent companies from making unsubstantiated assertions about their carbon footprint and other environmental impacts after a previous study had found that 53.3% of examined environmental claims in the EU were found to be vague, misleading or unfounded.
