India: Adani Group project faces strong local opposition and legal controversy over 'illegal' forest land handover and infringement upon Indigenous rights in Kokrajhar

In Assam’s Kokrajhar district, strong local resistance has erupted over the proposed Adani thermal power plant in the Parbatjhora area. Hundreds of residents have staged repeated protests, alleging that the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) government allotted 3,400 bighas of land to Adani Power without consulting affected communities. Much of the disputed land forms part of the Paglijhora Protected Reserved Forest, which was recently recognized under the Forest Rights Act as the traditional territory of Indigenous peoples and converted into Revenue Villages. Protesters and activists claim the handover violates both the Forest (Conservation) Act and the Forest Rights Act, bypassing required environmental and forest clearances, and threatening local livelihoods and constitutional rights. Community members and environmental advocates are now calling for urgent intervention, transparent investigation, and respect for legal and Indigenous protections before any development proceeds.

The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre has reached out to Adani Group for a response, but Adani Group did not respond to our request.
