Japan: ILO and JETRO to jointly study HRDD by companies in Japan, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam

"ジェトロ、ILOが覚書 「ビジネスと人権」テーマに調査" 22 November

[ Japanese-to-English translation: Business & Human Rights Resource Centre ]

On 21 October, the Overseas Research Department of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the ILO Office in Japan signed a memorandum of understanding for a joint study. The study will examine initiatives in Japan and three other Asian countries on human rights due diligence, which involves examining and responding to whether there is a risk of human rights violations in the company's corporate activities and value chain.

The joint study will [...] interview companies in the textile and apparel, electrical and electronic equipment and other industries that have bases of activity or business partners in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Viet Nam. It will also interview local government, workers, employers and other relevant stakeholders.

A joint report will be published in summer 2023 (scheduled) and examples will also be introduced on JETRO's website to provide information to Japanese companies and other interested parties.
