Qatar: Construction cos. incl. those working on World Cup projects allegedly terminate workers without proper notice while dues are outstanding; only FIFA responded

A Migrant-Rights.org investigation reveals Nepali construction workers made redundant ahead of the World Cup have not received proper notice, complete wages or end-of-service benefits. NGOs and rights activists have been concerned about the possibility workers may be sent home ahead of the tournament, after a government circular reportedly directed construction companies to finalise projects and reduce workforce ahead of the tournament. The dismissed workers included some who worked on World Cup projects, including Stadium 974 and Lusail Stadium.

The following allegations were raised against major construction companies in Qatar:

  • Al Bandary Engineering and Electro Watt: Workers report being terminated without proper notice and not being paid their owed dues. In August 2022, workers protesting months of unpaid wages were subsequently detained and some deported.
  • Redco International: Workers report being terminated without proper notice and receiving full end-of-service benefits, non-payment of wages, failure to provide contracts, payment of recruitment fees and misuse of short-term visas.
  • Al Samit Manpower: Workers reported being recruited by Al Samit for worker on World Cup projects and being told they could work for two years with no issue but subsequently suffered labour abuse by their employers.
  • Bin Omran Trading and Contracting (BOTC): Workers report being terminated without proper notice and receiving full dues, being asked to sign a document attesting to having received everything, and non-payment of wages.
  • Hassanesco (HCC): Workers report being sent home without receiving owed wages, overtime pay and end-of-service benefits.

Migrant-Rights.org reached out all of the companies named in the report but only Hassanesco responded; their response can be read in full below and in Migrant-Rights.org's report. The Resource Centre reached out to Al Bandary Engineering, Electro Watt, Redco International, Al Samit Manpower, Bin Omran, and also to FIFA regarding the workers on the World Cup projects.
