USA: Union seeks Sumitomo Corporation's response over allegations that cleaning contractor retaliated against janitors protesting labour conditions

In February 2021, the SEIU Local 32BJ, a branch of the Services Employees International Union, filed a human rights complaint to Sumitomo Corporation. The letter states that the company failed to uphold its Human Rights Policy and Corporate Social Responsibility guidelines by failing to address repeated human rights violations at its Miami office property, known as Miami Tower.

The union alleges that SFM Services, a cleaning contractor at Miami Tower, has repeatedly exposed janitors to unsafe working conditions. When the workers protested and attempted to form a union, they reported various forms of intimidation from their employer. SEIU Local 32BJ says that it has requested to meet Sumitomo Corporation several times, but the company has yet to respond.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Sumitomo Corporation to respond to these allegations. The company's response is available below.
