Vietnam: Land rights defenders detained for opposing Viettel Group

Land rights defender Trinh Ba Phuong spent years advocating against the land grabbing by the Viettel Group in Vietnam, and its impact on small-scale farmers across the country. Authorities arrested him on June 24, 2020, together with his brother Trinh Ba Tu, and their mother Can Thi Thieu. According to rights groups, the defender was arbitrarily detained and is suffering degrading conditions in prison. On February 10, 2022, Phuong’s father Trinh Ba Khiem published on social media a video filmed in front of Hanoi Police Detention Centre denouncing the ongoing solitary confinement of Trinh Ba Phuong and the alleged acts of torture and ill-treatment to which he has been subjected.
