Villagers Reject Academics' Public Consultation Meeting [Myanmar]

Villagers from the Kamawthway River Valley in Dawei have rejected a meeting organized by academics from the Environment Research Institution of Chulalongkorn University, who were hired by the Italian-Thai Development Company. Around 100 village representatives gathered…to object to this consultation meeting about the environmental impact assessment of the road link between Phunamrong and the Dawei Deep Sea Port…Villagers…are affected by the road construction connected to the Dawei Deep Sea Port and Special Economic Zone mega-development project due to the destruction of the local environment and the removal of villagers’ farmland without prior information or consent, which has gone on since 2010.
