Local organisation releases statement protesting operation of Kushiro Thermal Power Station, citing health & environmental issues

"【声明】釧路火力発電所の本格稼働中止を求める声明", 3 Dec 2020

…We, the Committee on Kushiro Thermal Power Station, protest the start of its commercial operation and request the suspension of its activities for the following reasons:

  1. During test operations of the power station, the surrounding residents could not sleep soundly due to the constant noise and vibrations it emitted. These residents hold serious concerns as they have not been promised that these noises and vibrations will stop when the power station officially starts its commercial operation…
  2. The power station emits an extremely high level of sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). In addition, the height of the chimney is very low, raising concerns that it will likely lead to negative environmental impact…According to the operators of the thermal power station, they have not set up any measures to prevent pollution. This has raised our suspicions that the operators have not considered health effects on residents at all.
  3. The power station will emit a high level of CO2, which will accelerate climate change…Operating new coal plants is inconsistent with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius…
