FIFA's collaboration with John Ruggie has potential to lead the way for global sports orgs.' on human rights

"FIFA’s Plan to adopt UN’s guiding principles on human rights could be a pioneer in global sports", 4 Jan 2015

The decision of FIFA...to task John Ruggie, UN Secretary-General’s special representative for business and human rights...[with] developing a plan for soccer’s global governing body to adopt the UN’s guiding principles on human rights is indeed a pioneering step in global sports...Following Ruggie’s review, such requirements will be an integral condition for countries entering bidding for the 2026 World Cup...Ruggie’s rules will not just cover construction workers at stadiums but also, for example, security forces protecting World Cup venues, ensuring they are adequately trained in the use of firearms and crowd control while controlling demonstrations without violence...FIFA so far maintained a dilly dally attitude on these allegations of human rights violation in Qatar...However, FIFA’s association with Ruggie is a move in the right direction...This move by FIFA has the potential to set the bar for other global sports organizations, and place respect for human rights including those related to media and Internet freedom; fair compensation for forced evictions; labor rights for workers building venues; protections for activists and peaceful protests; and protection against discrimination, including based on race, religion, politics, gender, nationality, disability, or sexual orientation and gender identity...
