Japan: Two teachers at Kadokawa Dwango Gakuen to go on strike, demanding better working conditions at N High School and other schools

"「角川ドワンゴ学園」教員2人がストライキへ 「N高」などの環境改善求める" 1 October 2021

[Japanese-to-English translation: Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

Two active teachers of Kadokawa Dwango Educational Institute, which operates large private correspondence high schools such as N High School, will go on strike on 7 October. [...].

The two are members of a labour union "the Private School Teachers Union", who used to teach at N High School but now work at different schools respectively.

The strike will call for a reduction in the number of students in charge, which sometimes reaches 150 students per teacher, better pay, and an improvement in the working environment, where multiple teachers have taken leave or resigned due to poor health conditions.

On 19 May of this year, the Kameido Labour Standards Inspection Office (Koto-ku, Tokyo) issued a corrective action report on N High School, citing the lack of breaks and other situations. In response to this, the school held a press conference in June, where Director Takao Kawakami explained that the situation had been improved.

On the other hand, the Private School Teachers Union claimed at a press conference on 1 October that "there are still days when teachers cannot take a break." The two sides have conflicting opinions.
