At the end of May 2025, it was reported that four migrant workers died and four others were injured after being exposed to toxic gas inside a septic tank while extracting gold and silver particles at jewellery company Achal Jewels’ premises.
Reporting says the original sanitation staff refused to enter the tank due to a strong odour, but Achal Jewels allegedly “persuaded other workers to take up the task by offering additional incentives beyond their regular wages”.
Authorities have launched an investigation into potential safety violations by Achal Jewels and the contractors.
In June, the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre invited Achal Jewels to respond to the allegations. The company did not respond.
