Norway: Myanmar civil society groups and victims of post-coup repression seek damages from Telenor for allegedly sharing personal data with military junta

In August 2025, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) reported that, following the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, Telenor Myanmar, a subsidiary of Norwegian telecoms company Telenor, allegedly disclosed customers’ personal data to the military junta, which was used to target activists and suppress opposition.

In September 2025, Defend Myanmar Democracy and Myanmar Internet Project, together with victims of the repression, sent a pre-action letter to the company notifying their intention to initiate legal proceedings in Norway to seek damages for the harm suffered.
