On 19 December 2023, human rights defenders were attacked by a group of miners in Indonesia. They were was actively resisting the nickel mine property of PT Gema Kreasi (GKP). GKP is part of the Harita Group whose business interests include processing nickel ore for use in electric vehicle batteries. Since GKP arrived on the island in 2017, there have been multiple attacks on farmers and activists resisting their operations.
