On 2 April 2019, human rights defender Ceferino Yunda Camayo was attacked and killed by anti riot police in Colombia. He was actively protesting for the recognition of community land rights and the and the guarantee of prior consultation for extractive or agro-industrial projects with impacts on indigenous territory. The organization he was a part of has also declared its opposition to oil exploration in the form of hydraulic fracturing activity, or fracking, that has begun at three pilot locations in the Magdalena River valley. Five companies, including ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips and state-owned Ecopetrol, are seeking to operate six proposed fracking blocs.
