Daniel Basto was killed while partaking in a communal sugar cane cutting, part of the Liberacion de la Madre Tierra movement. He was fired upon by members of the army, and later died of his injuries at a local hospital. A member of the community was previously allegedly killed by security officers from INCAUCA, a sugar cane business.
