Police officers on Tuesday attempted to clear with the use of force protesters blocking the central highway in La Oroya, region of Junín in the Central Andes of Peru. The protests was organized by Doe Run mine workers who entered the first day of an open-ended strike, claiming they will continue with a series of civil disobedience actions until their demands are met. They were blockading the highway since the early hours of the day and are not permitting any vehicles to cross. Confrontations with the police left 41-years-old Edward Soto de la Cruz dead with by a gunshot. The workers are demanding the government intervene in the auctioning of the company to save their jobs. The 4,200 workers fear that if Doe Run is liquidated they would lose their jobs.
