On February 2, 2022, the First Criminal Court of Appeals of Arequipa, Peru confirmed in the second instance the sentence against Jesús Mariano Cornejo Reynoso of seven years and four months in prison for the crimes of hindering public services and rioting as well as the payment of a civil reparation of 35,000 soles (approximately 7,900 euros). It also confirmed Jaime de la Cruz's sentence of 12 years and four months in prison for the crimes of disturbances, hindering public services and rioting. The decision attributes responsibility to Cornejo Reynoso and de la Cruz for actions of third parties in the framework of the strike and demonstrations that took place in April and May 2015 in the Tambo Valley against the execution of the "Tia Maria" mining project due to the environmental damages that could be caused by the mining exploitation in the region.
