On 16 February 2022, after 10 p.m., a group of men on motorbikes and in a private vehicle shot at the corner of the house of Juana Zúniga, leader of the Guapinol Environmental Committee, in a serious act of aggression against her, her family and her colleagues. At least 20 shots were fired at the place where a bus was leaving with members of the Committee who were on their way to an activity in the city of Tegucigalpa. In the defender's home were her mother and daughters, who had been subjected to yet another violent aggression in the years of struggle for the freedom of the water defenders of Guapinol and the San Pedro sector.

In September 2021, Juana had been subjected to intimidation and surveillance from the National Police.
